June 2019 Exciting projects!

I am thrilled to announce two (actually 3) super exciting projects I have coming up in June.

Our last concert of the season is a concert of some my favourite music: leider by Schubert, which will be sung by the super famous and brilliant Montreal soprano Dominique Labelle. Dominique was born here in Montreal, but she performs all over the world. After having lived for many years in the US, she returned to Montreal just a few years ago as the pride of McGill’s opera programme to teach at the Schulich School of Music. Dominique and I performed together many years ago, and we are really excited about reuniting for this concert.

Joining us at the keyboard is the American/French harpsichordist, pianist and conductor Jory Vinikour, famous for his incredible recording of Bach’s Goldberg Variations. Jory and I met when I was living in Paris over 20 years ago, and we have finally gotten the opportunity to collaborate. In addition to this concert (where I will be debuting the very well-known flute piece Trockne Blumen), Jory and I are recording together a very special and intriguing programme of Bach, but played as if it were at the time of Mendelssohn, all on historically appropriate instruments, I promise to keep you updated!

For this recording, and for out Schubert concert we will be using a very special piano brought up from Maine by the iconic piano builder Rodney Regier. We will be playing on a Graf replica (c.1820 Vienna), perfect for Schubert!

Then, late evening of June 20th and as part of the Montreal Baroque Festival, Autour de la flûte is joined by the Matsu Take Ensemble to present a fascinating programme of Japanese shakuhachi, Renaissance and Romantic flutes, called Sprezzatura and Shibui. We all will be accompanied by different plucked instruments (including koto, guitar and theorbo), with a special piece commissioned just for us by my dear friend and composer Aleks Schurmer. How exciting is that??

So exciting, in fact, that I am offering a special price if you purchase tickets to both events, 40$ regular /30$ senior /15$ student. (instead of 55$/40$/20$).

For those of you who already have a subscription you can contact me for discounted tickets for the Sprezzatura and Shibui concert.

I really look forward to seeing you, as always please come up and say hello after the concerts.

Join us on June 5th after Amour sans retour for some Port and chocolates (on the house!) to celebrate the end of another fabulous season.

Hopefully you will be able to make it to either of these, I am sure they will be unforgettable evenings, and now the weather has made going out a little easier.

Happy spring,

Mika
